Council elections - what  is that?

This spring 2027, student council elections will be held again! Every student at the University of Zurich (UZH) has the opportunity to elect 70 people to the VSUZH council. The election period runs from April 9th to April 23rd, 2027.

From April 9th to 24th, the students will elect their representatives, and the tallied results were published on April 29th.

For what?

Student engagement is incredibly valuable. We experience the University of Zurich firsthand every day and are familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of the teaching here. In the VSUZH (Student Union of the University of Zurich), you can collaborate with students from various disciplines on topics that affect all UZH students, extending beyond your own field of study. These include, but are not limited to, student financing, module registration, library opening hours, cafeteria offerings, new UZH buildings, multiple-choice exams, and much more. The size of our university makes it clear that an individual's voice may not be heard as much, but together we can achieve a great deal – be a part of the university and help shape it through us students!

Even if you don't have the capacity or interest to get involved yourself, it's all the more important that you cast your vote for one or more individuals and/or factions in the elections. By doing so, you send a clear message that student representation is important and that you want the students in the VSUZH to advocate for all students of the University of Zurich to the best of their ability.

Beginning of the first half of the term: The board informs the public about the procedure for the upcoming elections next spring. The elections consist of two phases: the list phase and the candidate phase.

28.09.2026 - 31.12.2026 List submission phase

February 1, 2027, 00:00 - March 22, 2027, 14:00: Application submission phase

The election party will take place on April 8, 2027.

April 9, 2027 - April 23, 2027 Election period: All students can vote.

The election results will be published on the council's website on April 20th.

18.05.2027 The newly elected students participate in the constituent meeting to fill all commissions and committees.

Here's how it works:

The electoral lists

In the election, students primarily choose a list. The candidates listed on that list can then be freely combined and their votes cumulated. Each candidate on the modified list receives one vote for themselves as well as one vote for the list they are running on. Any empty seats are counted as votes for the previously selected list.

The Saint-Laguë method is used to allocate the 70 council seats to the party lists based on the number of votes cast for each list. Of the lists that received a council seat, the candidates with the most votes are elected.
(Example: list A gets 6 seats, so the 6 candidates on this list with the most candidate votes are elected).

The Constituent Session

Once the elections are over and you can call yourself a (newly) elected VSUZH council member, the board will invite you to the inaugural meeting no later than two weeks after the election results are published. At this meeting, you will receive all the necessary information for your term of office, have the opportunity to ask questions, and meet the other council members.

The inaugural meeting will take place over two half-days in May 2021.
